At
long last, construction has started on an affordable housing project on the old
Fort Ord sight on Reservation Road. The
recession halted a number of projects in their tracks, and the land pegged for
development has a huge infrastructure built up around it with few people living
in the area. Dubbed Manzanita Place, the
$23 million complex will
have 66 units of affordable housing.
It's being backed by MidPen Housing and it is a small component of the first
phase of the 1,400 home East Garrison project being built on 244 acres. Low and very-low income residents can expect
to start moving in some time in May of 2013 if all goes according to plan. The project may have been delayed even longer
except for the fact that in order to receive $10 million in stimulus funds, it
has to get the project done by September of 2013. I am happy to see this get expedited. At Hands To Help Seniors, we are constantly
getting calls from seniors in need and one of their biggest difficulties is
finding affordable housing on the Monterey Peninsula. This is one of the most expensive places in
the country to retire, and housing is one of the biggest issues.
