Affordable Housing is extremely difficult to
find on the Central Coast, so I was happy to see that a few more units are
coming to downtown Monterey. This will
be convenient for seniors as they will be able to walk to various stores and
restaurants and be right next to the transit center. A two-story building is planned for the old
service station which was razed on Munras street and the 10,700 square foot
building isn't likely to get much opposition from the Monterey
County Planning Commission. The land
is owned by the city and the developers (Foothill Partners Inc. and CarlOutzen)
are asking for permission to start construction on a mixed-use building called
El Cuartel Nuevo, which will have 5,000 square feet of commercial space on the
ground floor and 10 studio apartments on the second floor. Foothill Partners is headed by Douglas Wiele,
a developer which has completed a number of projects here including Trader
Joes. All of the apartments will be
rented at below-market rates for low and moderate income tenants. It will also have 22 parking spaces and a
common laundry area
