There is a dearth of affordable housing for seniors on the Monterey Peninsula and the massive on-again off-again project to develop property on the old Ford Ord site in Del Rey Oaks may be off again. The city has request for proposals out to develop the 360 acre site and getting someone to step up to the plate in this week economic environment has been a challenge. Potential developers of land across the state have also been hindered by the funding which has been pulled for Redevelopment Agencies all across California. So far, the city of Del Rey Oaks has received letters of intent from seven potential developers, the first step in the project. Possible land uses now include a hotel, retail outlets, residences, a senior living center and parks. A golf course is not an option because of the water shortage. Residents will get to have a say in the matter after a developer is selected, with a number of town hall meetings to be held. I can only hope there is some affordable senior housing put on the site, although it will likely take many years to get any project built. We are constantly receiving calls from seniors looking for a nice and safe environment to live in here which they can afford on Social Security, and they are few and far between.
