Monterey, CA Hospitals Working On Preventing Blood Clots
by Richard Kuehn on 08/05/15
Blood clots are extremely dangerous and, unfortunately, very common. I was glad to read that hospitals are working on preventing more of theses as almost half of them occur when people are in the hospital or soon after discharge, making them among the most common causes of preventable deaths. Guidelines for preventing clots are in place, yet studies show that 40% to 60% of patients who would benefit don't receive appropriate treatments. They aren’t given anticlotting drugs because hospitals don’t reliably administer them and patients sometimes refuse them. Hospitals are starting to use electronic medical records to more precisely identify patients’ risk levels, holding refresher training sessions for nurses, and providing patients with educational materials on the dangers of blood clots.
